Confessions of a Former Shopping Addict: "A Handcrafted Bag Cured Me"
My name is Laura and I am a former shopping addict.
Yes, I was one of those people who knew by heart the opening hours of every store in the center of Milan, who had the app of every luxury brand on my phone and who woke up at 3 in the morning for online sales. My house was a museum of identical bags, in different colors, bought compulsively to fill a void that, ironically, was growing bigger and bigger.
Then, one day, something happened that changed everything.
The meeting that changed everything
It was an afternoon last spring. and like many others, I was walking along Corso di Porta Romana when I saw it: a leather bag on display in the window of Pelle Nuda Milano.
It wasn't perfectly symmetrical like my usual industrial luxury bags. There was something different, alive. I went in more out of curiosity than real interest.
"This is the last one we have of this model," the owner told me, "and even if we produced another one, it would never be identical to this one. Each of our bags is as unique as the leather it is made from."
At first I thought it was just another sales pitch. But then she showed me two bags of the same model and I realized: they were sisters, not twins. The leather of one had warmer undertones, the other had a slightly different texture. They were both beautiful, but in completely different ways.
The revelation
It was at that moment that I had an epiphany. For years I had been looking for standardized perfection, the exact replica of a model seen in a magazine. But true beauty, like true personality, does not lie in industrial perfection, but in uniqueness.
I began to understand that:
- Every piece of leather tells a different story
- Color variations are not defects, but characteristics that make each bag unique.
- True craftsmanship means accepting and enhancing the uniqueness of the material
The healing
I bought that bag, and it was my first "conscious bag." I didn't buy it because it was like someone else's, but because it wasn't and never would be. It was mine, uniquely mine.
Today, when I enter the Pelle Nuda Milano store, I no longer look for the perfect replica of something I saw on Instagram. I look for the bag that speaks to me, the one that has that particular shade of color, that unique texture of the leather that makes it unrepeatable.
The lesson learned
True exclusivity is not in owning the same object that everyone else has, but in owning something that no one else will ever have. Each Pelle Nuda Milano bag is like a work of art: you can make other similar works, but they will never be identical. And this is their true beauty.
A new way of looking at shopping
Today, when people ask me if I have "stopped" buying bags, I say no, I have not stopped. I have simply learned to buy better. I have learned to appreciate:
- The uniqueness of each piece
- The artisanal process that makes each bag unique
- The beauty of "imperfections" that make each creation unique
The real therapy
My recovery from compulsive shopping didn't come by stopping buying, but by learning to appreciate uniqueness. Every bag I now own tells a story, my story. And when someone asks me, "Where can I find a bag identical to yours?", I smile and say, "You can't. And that's the beauty of it."
